Master Facilitator Journal | Issue #0249, March 28, 2006 ....

Dear friends,

Last weekend I attended a meditation retreat and one of the teachers recounted a story told by an adult female friend. It went something like this.

The other day, my six-year old friend Joshua came over to visit me. He asked me if I'd like to play a game. I said, "Yes." He said, "Pretend you are surrounded by 1,000 hungry tigers and there is no escape. What would you do?" I contemplated this for a moment and unable to come up with anything I said, "I don't know, what would you do?" He said, "I'd stop pretending."

This week's article, "Stop Pretending," walks you through a simple process to help you create new meaning
around any problem or issue you have. Use this yourself and share it with your groups when they are stuck on individual or collective problems.

The Point

Stop Pretending
You have the freedom to any meaning you desire from your experiences.

Group Process Skill

Last weekend I attended a meditation retreat and one of the teachers recounted a story told by an adult female friend. It went something like this...

This story can be viewed simply as a spontaneous response from a clever six-year old or it can just as easily be seen as the secret to life.

At some level, we are all pretending, at least in the way we view any given situation. Knowing that we give everything that exists all the meaning that it has for us, we can choose to view any situation anew and hence, give it new meaning.

Now I'm not necessarily saying that the proverbial tigers don't exist. Perhaps they do. But do you need to be in the middle of them? Is there possibly an escape route you haven't considered before? One that lies inside of you, in that place where your thoughts emerge.

What would happen if you redefined the meaning of your most pressing issue today? Try it and find out. Here are some tips for doing so.

Application

Are the thoughts, ideas, and positions we hold on to so dearly really all that "real." After all, what were huge problems for us last year or even last month may today be completely forgotten as if they never occurred.

Do this exercise to get new insights into your "real" problems:

1. Write down your issue or problem distilling it into a single sentence if possible. If this is hard for you to do just now, go ahead and write down all the details first then rework it into a concise description of the problem. Here's an example, "I want to lead a simple life but have a tough time doing so as I'm so busy just making ends meet and providing for my family."

2. What do you believe to be REAL about this problem or situation? What do you believe the "facts" to be in this situation. The "facts" in my example might look like this, "Simple living and "keeping up" in our society when you have to work just isn't possible."

3. How is this problem giving you exactly what you want right now? Every "problem" we have exists because we are giving it our attention and energy. It is getting us something we want or need at some level, perhaps unconsciously. For example, keeping busy and not simplifying my life prevents the discomfort that arises when I have spare time and must be with myself.

4. Dream up and write down at least five other interpretations of this problem or issue. Get crazy and creative. Get help from others if necessary. Here are some examples:

a) "Keeping up" with the lifestyle I have is not the source of my happiness.
b) There are lots of things I can let go of to simplify my life now that aren't truly contributing to my happiness.
c) Leading a "simpler life" may not be what you're really after. What would you have if you're life was simpler? What can you do to get this now?
d) How clear are you on what your family really wants and needs from you in terms of being "provided for?" How much are they willing to be enlisted in your solution?
e) The current situation is exactly as you want it. What is it that keeps you from fully accepting your life as it is right now?

5. What new "reality" do you choose to adopt? Reflect on what you learned from this exercise and redefine your truth around your problem. How does it look to you now and what actions, if any are you committed to taking?

Testimonials

Listen to what others have said about previous classes on workshop design with Marion Franklin...

What a great workshop! I'm looking forward to implementing what I gleaned from this workshop into my own workshops.

The class was packed! I loved it! It was so helpful and moved at a nice clip. I have created workshops for 10 years and this gave me some information that I had missed!! Well delivered and engaging. I learned a lot. It is definitely an art.

Excellent class. I am in the process of developing two different workshops and this class helped me get over a hump with both of them!

Here are what people are saying about Marion's book, "7 Simple Secrets to Successful Workshops" which comes with this course...

7 Simple Secrets to Successful Workshops is a fabulous resource. I have avoided putting a workshop together for over two years, for fear of how to begin, how to put it together, how to be sure it lasts long enough, what to say, and how to not make a complete fool out of myself. After reading this ebook, I feel like I could put together a workshop that I would be proud of by this afternoon.

7 Simple Secrets To Successful Workshops makes it easy for coaches, trainers and facilitators who are new to developing and delivering workshops. I wish this material had been available when I began my own workshops, but this eBook reminds me to stick to the basics when developing new workshops.
